June 30, 2011 A report drawn up by the conservative opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party said Wednesday that Russia was chiefly to blame for last year's air crash that killed the Polish president and 95 others, and accused Moscow of hindering a Polish probe into the disaster. PiS deputies claimed that Russian ground controllers wrongly told the Polish pilots ahead of the crash that they were on the right course. PiS parliamentarians also accused Russia of falsifying and damaging evidence. The PiS report claimed that the rescue
operation after the crash in western Russia -- in which dozens of Poland's top political and military leaders as well as the president died -- was halted before it had been confirmed that all the victims were dead. The report was unveiled at a press conference by PiS leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski, whose twin brother President Lech Kaczynski died in the catastrophe, and by Antoni Macierewicz, who headed the PiS group of deputies who drew up the report. Macierewicz accused Russia of falsifying copies of recordings from the black box from the crashed presidential plane. The PiS report also claimed the authorities in Moscow had decided that the presidential plane should land, despite bad weather and the reservations of local air controllers. Source: The Warsaw Voice
